Abstract:

Constructive interactions through discussion forums allow students to open their horizons and thought processes to acquire more knowledge and develop skills. Discussion forums allow the teacher to explore in-depth the key concepts covered in the course, motivate students to articulate their ideas clearly, and challenge the students to think more deeply. Analysing the discussions helps instructors gain better insights into the personal and collaborative learning behaviour of students and intervene at right time with the right actions. Together with my colleagues, I developed the tools for analysing discussions from forums such as the school’s learning management systems as well as Slack. We apply machine learning, NLP, social networking, and text mining techniques to develop web-based tools which are aligned with the student learning frameworks and education theories. In this webinar, I shall share the technical and educational aspects of the tools with some examples. I shall also discuss our ongoing efforts to adapt the tools to various courses like programming and business given the current online teaching model.
