APSCE Student Wing Workshop: Academic Writing

Sherry Y. Chen, National Central University, Taiwan

Abstract

There are often misconceptions on postgraduate studies and what the process entails. For students who are in the midst of pursuing a higher degree (Masters or Doctor of Philosophy), this workshop provides an opportunity for students to share their experiences and learn of ways to cope with expectations and stress. Mentors are invited to provide insights and advice on ways to make meaningful progress during postgraduate studies. As part of students’ postgraduate studies, academic writing plays an important role in getting students to present information in a manner
that displays the student’s understanding of a particular subject or field. Writing to convince readers of their viewpoints and understanding is a significant challenge. Many students encounter similar problems and struggle to identify weaknesses in their academic writing, especially when tasked to write scholarly journal articles. This workshop will aid students who are experiencing difficulties in academic writing and like to know more about good writing habits.

Materials

Participants are encouraged to bring their own writing materials or laptops for note-taking and practice during the workshop.
